How hand plane selection depends on the type and scale of woodworking of woodworking you do. Once you have gained more experience and understanding, a woodworker can determine which hand planes to purchase next.
Using few hand planes with a good understanding of how to use and adjust them is preferred over owning many hand planes that are not often used. The hand plane numbers I refer to are a Stanley numbering convention developed over a century ago based on the sole length of a hand plane. Familiarity of certain hand planes will make your woodworking more efficient. The speed of your hand plane woodworking sequences will increase since you are intimately familiar with the each tool, in this case hand planes.
