Gathered at Taekwondowon, Korea’s state-of-the-art temple to taekwondo in the nation's southwest, are thousands of practitioners and enthusiasts of the martial arts from Korea and China.
They chop a block of wood in half with bare hands and show off their traditional combat techniques... for a very special event. Our Lee Minyoung brings us to Muju.
Thousands of taekwondo practitioners and enthusiasts from both Korea and China have gathered at the Taekwondowon in Muju County, in Korea's southwestern province of Jeollabuk-do,...to take part in the opening ceremony of the 2016 Korea-China Martial Arts Cultural Exchange Festival.
To welcome participants, masters from both countries showcased the unique movements and characteristics of their respective traditional martial arts, taekwondo and wushu.
" At the event, participants can also give Taekwondo a try, like this..... "
On the sidelines of the festival, the center provides a wide range of programs to encourage enthusiasts to give it a try at taekwondo techniques such as breaking wooden boards with their bare hands and feet.
"We knew this Taekwondo program and we came to Korea to see how the real Taekwondo is...it's really fun to be here and we can share our experience with the Korean teacher."
Taekwondo,... Korea's staple martial art, has evolved to become a world renowned sport and an official Olympic discipline with millions of practitioners around the world.
With the next world taekwondo championship scheduled to take place here in Korea next year, the Taekwondowon has organized this week-long event to promote the sport as well as cement cordial friendship between the two countries.
