There have been so many overlooked and underrated games that I didn't even know where to start. These were my top picks in the end:
Honorable Menitons:
-Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning - 2012 (If you like the Elder Scrolls games, especially Skyrim, you'll like this one).
-The Saboteur - 2009 (If you like GTA (Grand Theft Auto) and WWII games, this is the one for your)
-Phantasmagoria - 1995 (An FMV written by Roberta Williams, better known for the King's Quest Series)
Primal Rage – 1994 (This one on one fighting game came around the time of giants like Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct. This was as good as many of these, but nowhere near as popular)
Outer Wilds – 2019 (AnnaPurna chooses them wisely)
Here's the top ten!
10. Journey to Silius – 1990 – NES (If Contra games are your thing, this one's for you)
9. The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery – 1995 – PC (Designed by Jane Jensen, this is a criminally underrated Sierra game)
8. Tainted Grail: Conquest – 2021 – PC (An amazing deckbuilding ARPG)
7. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West – 2010 – PC (Ninja Theory's take on the Chinese myth. If you liked the original God of War for the PS2, this is likely your thing)
6. Return to Zork – 1993 – PC (the long awaited sequel to the 70's classic)
5. Shadowrun Hong Kong – 1993 – PC (An underrated cyberpunk RPG)
4. ActRaiser 2 – 1993 – SNES (Best side scrolling metroidvania for the Super Nintendo)
3. Shadows Awakening – 2018 – PC (An epic Action RPG that doesn't try to rip off Diablo II)
2. Thronebreaker. The Witcher Tales – 2018 (CD Projekt Red made this deckbuilding gwent based RPG that nobody played. Why? That's beyond me.
1. Mountain King – 1983 – ATARI (Ask anyone who has been around for four decades and they'll mention games like Pac-man, Pitfall, Superbreakout, Asteroids and severall others in a flash. But it seems like this obscure side scrolling platformer flew under everybody's radar.
