Gas Spring assisted retracting staircase for loft / attic access in my garage. No need for motorised system or electrics. Quick and easy to use and is light to pull down and push up. After an initial push, it retracts up under it's own power. Solid wood staircase construction with stainless steel hinge mechanism. Very strong and sturdy with quiet operation and wooden steps insure non slip when ascending / descending to the room in the roof. The stairway is fully retractable into the ceiling joists and is held in both up and down positions by the gas-spring struts. Another
succesfull DIY project.
After 5 years of continous use, they are still working as good now (Feb 2016) as the day I first built them. Not had to do any maintenance or re-gassing whatsoever. However. with the amount of requests for plans for my stairs, I have drawn them up, but need to research patents and legalities before putting them on sale. WILL HOPE TO MAKE THEM AVAILABLE SHORTLY
Just found out that a certain leading US ladder manufacture has filed a patent on the application of using gas springs to raise / lower ladders / stairs. This is preventing me from selling or issuing plans on MY design, unless any of you out there know a legal way around this.
