More than R100-million has been secured by the provincial Department of Cooperative governance and traditional affairs to assist drought stricken areas in the Eastern Cape. This is to provide short and middle term solutions, but it does not cater for long term solutions.

This emerged at a water summit that was held in Graaff-Reinet today, under the theme, "Preventing day zero and re-engineer water business for sustainable future".

Large parts of the Eastern Cape are severely affected by the drought, with the supply dams to a number of towns bone dry. The Eastern Cape received less than 30% of its average spring rainfall between September and November. The drought-stricken Graaff-Reinet received only 12% of its average in this period.
