It is possible to see ALL Tonga's must-sees, do all of Tonga's must-dos and see Tongatapu in one day.

Tongatapu is the main island of Tonga. It is Tonga’s centre of government and is also home to Tonga’s capital city Nukualofa. 70.5% of Tonga’s entire population lives on this island alone, making it Tonga’s most populated island. Tonga’s total population is just over 100,000, so that makes about 70,000 people living on Tongatapu, 100 square miles (260 square kilometres) in total.

It takes about 1-1.5 hours to drive the entire length of the island, from the Western tip right to the Eastern tip. In other words, Tongatapu is pretty small.

It remains the gateway for many people arriving in the Kingdom so most people will at least pass through here for a day or two before heading out to the other islands, even if you don’t stay.

So on this small island of Tongatapu, can you see ALL of the BEST Tonga sites it has to offer in just one day?!

The answer is yes.

But you need a car, and a map.

And if you want to make the most out of it, you’re going to need an early morning too.

------------------- A Country Without COVID-19, You Say? -------------------

On 19th March I got stranded on Tonga, a small country in the middle of the pacific ocean with a population of 100,000.

I took a flight from Fiji to Tonga and that afternoon Fiji reported its first case of coronavirus. From then on, the rest is history - recorded on video for your enjoyment!

These corona-free diaries include lockdowns, fluffy dogos, and cyclones.
Tonga remains a country without Coronavirus and it has been a country without COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. It has never had a single case of coronavirus and it remains one of the few countries without coronavirus.
