10 – Name of the Murder Hornet
You might think, who gave this giant Asian species the name 'Murder Hornet'?
Jun-ichi Takahashi, a researcher at the Kyoto Sangyo University in Japan, said the species have earned the Murder Hornet nickname because it's an aggressive group that can expose the victim to doses of toxic venom equivalent to that of a venomous snake. Yes, you heard it right. The murder hornet is just like a venomous snake… with wings attached!
First the Coronavirus pandemic and now this, we honestly wish we could skip directly to 2021.
9 – Size of the Murder Hornet
Their queens can grow up to 2 inches long. Normal bees, on the other hand, range from 1-1.4 cm long. This means that they are quadruple the size of a normal-sized bee. Imagine coming across one of these gigantic hornets. It would freak me out. What about you?
Already freaked out by these Murder Hornets? Wait till you see the number 1 fact about these hornets. We bet it will blow your mind.
8- Stinger Length of the Murder Hornets
Can you guess how long the stingers of these murder hornets are? Quarter of an inch or half a bee-size! While I am sure that none of us would want to know what the sting feels like but… a quarter of an inch..? well, that means it could easily penetrate through the arms of the skinny lot amongst us.
7- Murder Hornets as Predators
The murder hornets can wipe out the entire bee population all on their own. This is pretty concerning because the bee populations are already on the verge of extinction due to climate change. The last thing the endangered species may need is a group of murder hornets ready for their prey. The hornets use their jaws to decapitate the bees and take over their hives.
Want to hear an interesting fact?
It takes the hornets just over an hour to consume over 30,000 bees! To defend themselves against this monstrous species, the Asian bees developed a defense-mechanism which involves gathering and vibrating with such intensity to cook the hornets to death. Unity is strength, isn't it? Unfortunately, the North American bees have yet to adapt to this mechanism and are an open target for the Murder Hornet unless they successfully manage to do so.
6- Pheromones
They leave a tracker on their targets so the rest of the hornets' colony knows which bee-hives to attack. Intelligence and teamwork – always a lethal combination. How do they leave these trackers though?
As soon as a murder hornet finds a beehive, it secretes a special kind of scent to be trailed by the other hornets. These killer bees then invade the hives and declare war on the bees there, killing them and taking over their homes.
5- How they hunt
The deadly species attacks predate in a far less complex manner. First, swarms of hornets will infest the colony. Then, they will proceed to eat the heads of the bees wiping out the hive in about 1.5 hours. This would lead to the feeding stage where they occupy the hive for about a week to consume all the honey and yes, the baby bees as well.
Simple and deadly.
4- Hunting Period
Some (possibly) good news is that murder hornets start their hunting in April and are not active all year long which means they will eventually go away. This murderous species lies dormant through the winters because of the cold. Does this mean we have no risks from them? Certainly not. While they may be dormant in the winters the murder hornets are pretty aggressive during the summer periods. Their body color becomes intense and the weight of the Queen increases by approximately 20 percent. Scientists believe that it may only be a matter of time before they get immune to the cold but let's just hope they are wrong. I don't think we are in the right state of mind to play the level 8 of this Jumanji game.
If you are blown off by these already, we now present to you our top three Murder Hornet facts:
3- Where there is smoke, there is fire
One bee cannot exist on its own and typically has nests anywhere from 500-1500 murder hornets.
