FORT BENNING, GEORGIA — Two women will graduate from the U.S. Army’s Ranger School on Friday, making them the first female soldiers to graduate from the elite program after women were allowed to take part in the training school for the first time earlier this year.
The woman are among 96 students who passed the intense, physically challenging regimen out of 400 troops who were accepted into the course in April. The female graduates, however, will not be eligible to apply to join the 75th Ranger Regiment. The Pentagon has ordered that all military occupations be opened to women starting next year, although the services can request a waiver for some jobs.
According to Military.com, the training course consists of three parts, all of which include a series of military exercises that push soldiers to their physical limits. The first part is known as the Fort Benning Phase, where soldiers have to be able to complete at least 49 push-ups, 59 sit-ups, a five-mile run in 40 minutes or less, and six chin-ups.
The second part, called the Mountain Phase, requires participants to operate in small units in rugged terrain undergoing sleep deprivation and surviving on one or two meals a day for three weeks, while completing a variety of military combat exercises.
The third part, called the Florida Phase, involves water-related exercises such as small boat operations, ship to shore operations and jungle and swamp survival exercises that test patrol and leadership skills, lasting for 16 days.
“This course has proven that every soldier, regardless of gender, can achieve his or her full potential,” said Army Secretary John McHugh said in a statement, according to CNN.
