Freedom Fighters blew my 10-year-old mind when I played it on the PlayStation 2 back in the day. It was the tactical mission planning and troop management that I have not yet seen at that point. Here, you are a plumber called Chris Stone, the main guy in a full-on assault on the Russian invaders who have breached the American soil.
Freedom Fighters was released in September 2003 on PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox, and Pc. The version I played for this video was the re-release for the PC from September 21st in 2020. This re-release allows PC players to play the game with full compatibility for modern systems and support for most resolutions out there now. It is also worth noting that Freedom Fighters was not published by EIDOS Interactive, who worked with IO on the Hitman games. Instead, EA published the game.
IO Interactive has once again worked with Jesper Kyd, the man, the myth, and the legend behind a lot of outstanding music in video games even today.
The main gaming loop revolves around you and your mates shooting a fictional Russian army until none of them is left. Freedom Fighters is split into chapters, with each chapter being divided into 3 or 4 different locations. To complete the chapter, you will need to figure out how you should visit the locations.
Having this space to develop tactics and plans of action is a big plus in this title, and I have not seen anything like it since or before. As you will complete these goals, your charisma will grow, which will unlock more spaces in your squad for extra freedom fighters to join you on your missions. Having a team of fighters unlocks new depths in the gameplay. You will be then able to command your troops to either charge the enemy, follow you or hold the position. The AI has not aged particularly well, and I often found them either not doing anything or doing what I asked them wrong.
a lot of the fans expected a follow-up game where Chris would continue his fight against Bulba, but after 17 years, there does not seem to be much lined up now.
However, let us not forget that this game was released 17 years ago. IO Interactive did just re-release it again on PC.
Freedom Fighters is not a perfect game, and it did not age particularly well.
The story is just barely serviceable. The playtime short and the graphics and controls show the consoles' limitations from the past.
Could this be a good indication to show that there are plans for a follow-up?
The plot is there, but you do not need to worry about being overburdened with complicated subplots and developments.
The game will tell you a story in the most straightforward way it can, just to give you context for your fight against the oppressor.
It allows us to revisit these moments and to appreciate how the gaming industry has evolved.
And how we have evolved along with it.
