Created in the mid-1980s, Dark Horse became known for publishing licensed comic adaptations from movie and tv franchises, as well as creator-owned content. They soon grew into one of the largest comic publishers in the U.S., often competing with Image Comics for the third ranking. More significantly, they have been an ardent advocate for creators' rights, while providing a platform for comic series that didn't always fall into the predominant super-hero genre.
