In a small studio in the northern city of Makeni a group of teenage girls is making radio. The girls present and broadcast programmes on girls' rights. Girls in Sierra Leone aren't often on the radio. They're more likely to be forced into getting married. Teenage pregnancy, early marriage, gender-based violence and cultural or religious tradition means girls are often taken out of the classroom with only 15% of girls in Sierra Leone reaching secondary school.
Plan International's Girls Making Media project is giving teenage girls the chance to report on adolescent girls' issues in West Africa. 78% of people have access to a radio in the highly illiterate country of Sierra Leone, making it the primary news source. Across Africa Plan's radio projects are giving girls a voice and creating the continent's future radio stars.
