The Homecoming King and Queen Are Walked Down the Field by Their Esophageal Cancer-Stricken Father
Brett Yancey, a 47-year-old battling esophageal cancer, made a heroic 50-yard walk down the football field at Southside High School with his 17-year-old daughter, Sarakate, who was voted homecoming queen this year. Brett's determination to accompany his daughter at the homecoming ceremony, despite his illness, moved onlookers to tears of pleasure and inspiration.
The story of Brett Yancey is one of incredible perseverance and devotion. His movement has been severely impaired by his seven-year struggle with cancer, but he mustered the strength to take the symbolic walk with his daughter on this momentous occasion.
Brett's wife Carrie Yancey recalled how the atmosphere was electric with joy and pride as they witnessed the touching scenario from the stands. She felt her heart racing as she prayed for her husband and daughter to make it home safely from their walk.
Brett's health had recently deteriorated to the point where he had difficulty performing even the most menial of activities. His wife voiced her worries that he wouldn't be able to make the walk during the homecoming ceremony due to his exhaustion.
To go to the other side of the football field, Carrie advised that Brett take a golf cart. Brett's response to his wife's suggestion that he take a golf cart to the game was indicative of his selflessness and devotion to his daughter: "I don't need a golf cart — I'm going to walk my baby to the opposite sideline." Brett Yancey proudly walked alongside his daughter, Sarakate, who was crowned homecoming queen and carried flowers as she made her way to the game. Everyone who witnessed their emotional and inspiring walk of triumph across the field will never forget it.
Carrie Yancey also expressed the family's appreciation for the outpouring of love and prayers from neighbors, acquaintances, and extended relatives and friends. She said that despite missing several of their girls' high school sporting events and other activities owing to the difficulties of Brett's treatment and the associated travel, their faith remained strong.
For the Yanceys, Sarakate's crowning as homecoming queen was an especially meaningful celebration since it reflected not only their pride in her accomplishment but also their shared values of love, perseverance, and optimism. The Yanceys wish for Brett's memory to go on as an inspiration to all who knew him for his bravery, strength, faith, and hope.
