Game Review & Impressions
---------------------------------------------------
One of the earliest forays into rudimentary 3D, Zaxxon is a bit of an arcade classic. The isometric viewpoint not only gives the game a cool visual style, it introduces height elevation on the X-axis, forcing players to adjust the height of their craft to avoid hazards, as well as line up shots on target.
The actual gameplay of Zaxxon is still relatively basic, but is comparable to similar titles of this era. You must blast as many enemies and ground targets as possible to earn points, plus keeping your shop topped off with fuel by destroying orange fuel silos. Each game wave consists of three stages, culminating in a fight against the titular Zaxxon destructo-bot; blow up the missile ensconced in it's launch port for extra points and big explosion.
It might not seem like it now, but this would have looked pretty darn cool on the shop floor of the arcade, particularly when compared to the majority of its 2D stablemates. The game has no ending and you probably won't last too long, but Zaxxon is a cool slice of gaming history worth checking out.
