The ballet Coppelia, choreographed by Arthur Saint-Leon, is a comedic ballet centered around the romance between Swanilda and Franz. Franz falls in love with Coppelia, a lifelike doll that he has mistaken for a real woman. In this scene, Swanilda is given a stalk of wheat, and if she heard the wheat rattle, it meant that Franz truly loves her. However, when Swanilda shakes the wheat, she hears nothing, and runs off in tears. Virginia Ballet Company performed Coppelia in the spring of 2018.
