A home made goat pump system at work. Usually we hand milk, but with 7 goats this can sometimes put a strain on our hands, so we built this, a manual pump that can be built by any small holder and serve a highly useful purpose when milking more than a few goats.

It consists of a simple set up:

A vacuum pump easily found on ebay
Food grade pipe about 5mm internal diameter
Clear 20" water filter housing (a 10" can be used but will hold only 1-2 litres of milk)
Adequate connections to join the lot
Couple of syringes 20ml for ours as we do not have huge teats with our herd not being purpose built milkers. We are after the nutritious high butterfat content more than volume.

I must note: NEVER pump the vacuum to over 41kpa as over this pressure can cause infection and mastitis as it is far too high and puts unnecissary strain on a goat's teats. Also a future modification to our set up is to perhaps change the syringes to a more flexible mode of connecting to the teats as it is thought that the plastic can be too hard on the teats. We have kept an eye on this and does not seem to be too much of an issue, but for those who over pressurise the vacuum pump, this could well be the reason why such an advisory has come up.
