(12 Jan 2018) Ousted Catalan president Carles Puigdemont met in Brussels on Friday with members of his pro-independence movement, a few days before the Spanish regional parliament sits to choose its new government.
A spokeswoman for the movement said she hopes that Puigdemont, who is in exile in Belgium, will be returned to office and that the government in Madrid will recognise the new cabinet.
Puigdemont, who was ousted as part of the Spanish government's takeover of Catalonia, risks being detained if he comes back, as do four other ex-ministers who fled with him.
Developments surrounding Catalonia have gripped Spain for months, and the tumult is showing no sign of letting up before the new parliament's first session on Wednesday.
