William Walton 1902-1983. His music from the 1944 Olivier film Henry V, (Passacaglia - The Death of Falstaff) accompanies these images of English Heritage - 'BERRY POMEROY CASTLE', which for centuries has been nothing more than a lonely, romantic ruin.
Perhaps not quite so 'romantic' in reality! This walled 15th century grand house set in the glorious South Hams countryside was destined never to become a proper home. A melancholic atmosphere pervades the ruin and nature continues to make her claim, fashioning from desolation the 'picturesque' to the stlye of French landscape painter 'Claude Lorrain'. So here is the archetypal 'Romantic Ruin', where only (quite literally) 'troubled ghosts' from the past inhabit the decaying walls.
