The song is quite self-explanatory and so well known I think it would be more interesting to tell the story behind its creation.
'I Will Survive' was written by Freddie Perren (with a minor contribution from Dino Fekaris). At that time Freddie was an unemployed songwriter fresh of being fired from the "Motown Records" company and he was worried about what his future would be.
One day he was watching tv and a song he wrote from a movie was playing. He realized money would soon come as part of the royalties. At that moment he had an epiphany and exclaimed "I will survive!".
That was the sparkle to writing "I will survive" that, although it is more of an empowering song after the end of a bad relationship, it is also an anthem to never give up on ourselves.
Another fun story is that after Gloria Gaynor recorded this song, it ended up on a B side of her coming up the vinyl. The song on the A-side, strongly wanted by the record company director (these guys get more stuff wrong than right), was soon forgotten.
DJs at clubs started to play the B side and the audience went nuts.
I can only imagine how many songs have been put in the bin by a record company director's poor judgment. There must be thousands of hidden hits in the archives.
