IRONMAN 70.3 is a few days away from kicking off in North Idaho, and staff have already started setting up for this weekend.
Athletes and volunteers are excited about the race making its return. Thousands of participants from over the country will be testing their physical limits in the half-triathlon.
"IRONMAN goes on rain or shine," said Volunteer Director of IRONMAN Michelle Haustein. "You can't be wimped and be IRONMAN."
Ironmen are once again taking over Coeur d'Alene. The city hosted the race in 2021 after canceling the event for two consecutive years. However, this year's competition is back with a much shorter race.
"As far as the comparison between last year's IRONMAN Coeur D'Alene and this year's IRONMAN 70.3. It takes just as much staff, even though it's the half of the distance, still just as many as athletes," Haustein said.
In 2021, athletes had the 140-mile course of running, swimming, and biking.
"We are still 3,000 strong and their course out there is the half course but we still have to set up for the full course," Haustein said.
Those 3,000 athletes who signed up this year are from 72 different areas. As far as volunteers go, there's been fewer that signed up this year.
"Last year, we had slightly over 1,400 volunteers registered. It was hot. I think people got scared, so this year it's just 1,000," Haustein said.
They are looking for volunteers for the bike, run, and transition course to ensure the safety of athletes and pedestrians during the race.
Athletes can begin checking in on Friday, and the actual race will begin at 6 a.m. on Sunday.
