Here's a wartime look at the fantastic use of gliders and troop carrier C-47s starting with the day before D-Day, D-Minus One -- 5 June 1944. Classic AAF footage shows CG-4 gliders being removed from crates in England, with the crates becoming temporary housing for the men who would use the gliders soon. British Horsa gliders in U.S. markings are seen on towed takeoffs from England, and glider landings are depicted in the film. The doctrine and execution of aerial warfare in World War II was a brief product of its time, soon to be outmoded by newer machines and newer capabilities.
