On the newest episode of The History Of, we take a look at the life and history of L.A. Noire's Detective Cole Phelps and why he is a colossal dirtbag.
Cole Phelps was a United States Marine Corps Lieutenant who served during World War 2. Cole Phelps had no care about winning the war, but to make a name for himself to cement a great future. This led to many in his unit disliking him because of his selfish ways.
During a flashback in L.A. Noire, we see a battle that Cole Phelps was a part of, he witnessed the death of his entire battalion, including one of his fellow Officer Candidates. For being the sole survivor of the night, Cole Phelps was honored the Silver Star and promoted to First Lieutenant.
In another Flashback, Cole Phelps told his unit to search and destroy any settlements that may have enemies. After being led to an ambush, they burn down a cave that was full of innocent civilians. Cole Phelps demands that his men shoot the civilians, and one of them actually shoots Cole Phelps on purpose.
Cole Phelps was treated for his wound and discharged from the Marines. He returned to L.A. and began working for the LAPD as a police officer. From there Cole Phelps worked his way up to detective by putting away people who he thought were guilty but turned out to be inncocent.
While working as a vice detective, Cole Phelps begins a romantic affair with a German Singer, this leads to Cole Phelps being suspended from the LAPD, being kicked out by his wife and being charged with adultery.
L.A. Noire is a mystery-solving sandbox game developed by Team Bondi and published by Rockstar Games. It was released on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on May 17 in North America and on May 20 in Europe. It was re-released in November of 2017 on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
The game is set in "a perfectly re-created Los Angeles" of 1947, with players being given an open-ended challenge to solve a series of murder mysteries.
