(23 Jan 2017) LUCA GUADAGNINO BRINGS LATEST FILM TO SUNDANCE
Armie Hammer says he was so anxious to work with famed Italian director, Luca Guadagnino, that he would've been open for anything.
"I would've done any script that he was doing just as a chance to work with him and I'm thrilled that I got a chance to," said Hammer at the premiere of "Call Me By Your Name" Sunday (22 JAN. 2017) at the Sundance Film Festival.
The movie, adapted from a novel of the same name by Andre Aciman, stars Timothee Chalamet as a teen living in Italy in the 1980's who falls in love with an academic staying in his parent's villa.
Hammer says while making the movie in Italy, he also learned that his director has a talent for cooking.
"We got to live the Italian summer experience and get paid for it and do it with Luca Guadagnino and he would cook for us and oh my god, he's a better cook than he is a filmmaker. No, no, no. Like - like we spoke to several chefs in the little town that we were filming because we got to know everybody and all the great restaurants and all that and all of them would go, 'You guys know that you're dining with the greatest chef in Italy.' Next time you talk to him ask him about it. They say he's the greatest chef in Italy."
Chalamet says being directed by Guadagnino, who has made movies like the cult hit "I Am Love" and "A Bigger Splash," is a film class in itself.
"Luca is a genius, you know, like you talk to - it's cool to see people live and breathe film because you talk to other actors sometimes there's a certain, not necessarily terminology, but way of talking about things, you know, where you're all on the same level, you know? But then you talk to Luca about films and you're like, 'Oh, wow, that's... I have no idea what you're talking - I can't keep up with what you're saying,'" he recalls.
"So when you're around these people that breathe what they do, you know - that was dramatic - but when they breathe what they do, yeah, like you said it's inspiring, you know, and Luca loves to make movies so it's great. I think he's one of the most talented filmmakers of our generation so, yeah, it was a dream to work with him."
Guadagnino believes the film is a breakout role for Chalamet.
"He's extraordinary. I mean it. He's extraordinary. You'll see. People will flip for him and in general the cast of this movie is fantastic, like Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar, Esther Garrel. They gave so much to this movie, such a complete generosity and you will see that on screen for sure."
Guadagnino's next film is "Suspiria" starring Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson and Chloe Grace Moretz.
