During Stalin's dictatorship over the Soviet Union, there were a number of heads of the NKVD, the secret police who were executed after they crossed the leader. The NKVD themselves were known for carrying out Stalin's brutal purges including The Great Purge, where its estimated that up to 1.2 million people were killed after suspecting of dissenting against Stalin and his government. Genrikh Yagoda was the Chief of the NKVD who was involved in beginning the Great Purge, but he would never see it through being brutally killed and executed.
Yagoda claimed that he was a Communist revolutionary in his teenage years, and he rose throughout the ranks of the Soviet Union as also the Head of the OGPU, a group which oversaw huge labour projects. In this role he used slave labour to build canals quickly, but there was a huge death toll because of this. Yagoda was then approached by Stalin to become the Chief of the NKVD, the secret police and he was given instructions to carry out torture and execution of those suspected of resisting Stalin's leadership. The NKVD were brutal in their work, and Yagoda even gave Stalin use of a poison factory he has established allowing him to eliminate any threats using poison.
But Yagoda eventually fell from grace, as he was accused of being sympathetic to some resistance elements and also not reporting Trotsky's plans for resistance. Stalin had him arrested and handed over his role as the Head of the NKVD to Nikolai Yezhov who brutally slandered and accused Yagoda his former boss of a number of crimes. Yagoda was placed on trial for treason and other crimes, and was sentenced to death. Within minutes of him being found guilty, he was dragged out of a courtroom and taken to an execution chamber where he was executed and shot dead. He was treated brutally as it was Yezhov who had the say over what happened with his execution.
