Biodiversity in food and agriculture is indispensable to food security, human health and sustainable development. Biodiversity supplies many vital ecosystem services, such as creating and maintaining healthy soils, pollinating plants and controlling pests. It makes food production systems and livelihoods more resilient to shocks and stresses, including those caused by climate change.
