TODAY'S FALLACY: ARGUMENT FROM SILENCE (Argumentum et Silento)

Shhhh.. here that? That's an Argument from Silence. Many atheist's (and unfortunately, many Christians) commit this fallacy. Some have claimed the Hittites never existed because there was no evidence, until evidence was found. Or that Sodom and Gomorrah didn't exist because there was no evidence of their existence, until, again, evidence was found. In like manner, our critic, who comes to us all the way from AcademyApologia, claims the Sabbath did not exist from creation because there is no evidence of it... or rather, because the actual word "sabbath" is missing from Genesis. Until, of course, you go to Moses' second book:

"For in six days the Lord MADE heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the SABBATH day, and hallowed it." (Exo. 20:11).

If you read the last chapter of Genesis, and the first chapter of Exodus, you realize that Moses is continuing the narrative. Therefore, whatever information might be missing from Genesis, Moses can include it in Exodus. And indeed he does right there in Exodus 20:11, where he comments on the creation account and inserts the noun "sabbath" into it. So according to Moses, there was a "sabbath" in Genesis, and it is the seventh day of creation week.

AcademyApologia's argument from silence is a logical fallacy because, "generally speaking, absence of evidence is not evidence...(logicallyfallacious.com). So to argue that the Sabbath didn't exist until the Exodus because the word "sabbath" in not in Genesis is fallacious. It is similar to the word-concept fallacy, which argues that a concept is absent because its corresponding word is missing. It is like arguing that there is no millennium in Revelation because the actual word "millennium" is missing, even though there is clearly a concept of a 1000-year reign (Rev. 20:2-3). Despite the missing noun "sabbath" in Genesis, Moses, who was an inspired prophet and author of the scriptures, places the noun in the creation account, and that should settle the matter. The Bible says, "The first one to plead his cause seems right, until his neighbor comes and examines him" (Pro. 18:17).
