STORYLINE:
Three heavily armed men have seized a Roman Catholic priest in a suburb of El Salvador's capital.
Police said Father Rogelio Esquivel was apparently kidnapped on Sunday night as he arrived at the Immaculate Conception Church in Santa Tecla, about 7 miles (12 kms) west of San Salvador.
National Police Commissioner William Santillana said he did not know if the kidnappers had sought a ransom, but he said police were searching for the priest and his captors.
The archbishop of San Salvador, Fernando Saenz Lacalle, condemned the kidnapping on Monday and said he did not believe there was a personal motive for the kidnapping. He said that Esquivel's family is poor.
Police have reported at least 40 kidnappings in El Salvador so far this year. There were 112 reported last year.
Hundreds of Santa Tecla residents died in January when an earthquake caused a massive landslide onto a neighborhood.
The Immaculate Conception Church was damaged in the quake.
