For decades, psychologists had urged those who had suffered from trauma to express their emotions and to speak about their experience. But more recently, this was found to make things worse, as speaking about a traumatic event can recapitulate it in a person's mind. Instead, clinical psychologist George Bonanno explains that, in some cases, silence is golden, and sometimes time is necessary to allow the mind to heal.
