Medusa, originally a beautiful woman, was transformed into a terrifying creature with venomous snakes for hair by Athena after being violated by Poseidon. The hero Perseus was tasked with killing Medusa. With the help of Athena and Hermes, Perseus used a reflective shield to decapitate Medusa while she slept. From Medusa's blood sprang Pegasus and Chrysaor. Perseus used Medusa's head as a weapon and later gifted it to Athena, who affixed it to her shield, the Aegis. The story symbolizes the interplay between beauty and terror, as well as themes of vengeance and justice.
