This video will explore the many social and economic opportunities in Mumbai and its slum Dharavi.
First, the social opportunities.
As a city, Mumbai provides much greater access to healthcare and education services than rural areas where these are much scarcer if they are available at all. The same applies to electricity, which is still not available in some remote areas of the country. Mumbai also has the highest percentage of internet access of any city in the country.
Dharavi has a strong sense of community. It is densely populated and people live and work in the same place, as well as doing washing communally. This results in a low crime rate as everybody knows each other. The space is also flexible, for example street space is used as a make-shift mosque in times of prayer. There is also water access, however this is limited to just 2 hours per day.
And now for the economic opportunities.
Dharavi has a very high employment rate of 85% and is home to high streets full of shops and over 300 bakeries. Many of these jobs are informal, however they give people an opportunity to earn wages to live from. Cheap labour and production costs mean businesses are viable here too, with one room factories being found in the slum. The slum generates $1 billion a year and some people have even become millionaires.
Recycling is common in Dharavi with 80% of plastics being recycled and over 1 million rubbish bags being collected daily. This not only is beneficial for the environment but recycling is often sold, providing another income source for locals.
In the next video we will look at the many challenges in the city.
