A man has gone viral on TikTok after undergoing a permanent voice-altering surgery and sharing a 'before and after' sound clip – but social media users say he wasted his money.
The surgery on the 25-year-old patient from Portugal was performed by Dr Kursay Yelken, a professor of ear, nose and throat diseases, as well as head and neck surgery, who trained at Harvard Medical School and is now based in Istanbul, Turkey.
The surgeon has been performing operations on people's vocals for over 15 years, helping them make their voices deeper or higher – including one man who said he had dysmorphia surrounding his voice.
"This particular patient had been referred to us by his psychiatrist," Kursat told Jam Press.
"He had been having problems in his personal and professional life because of his voice and his psychiatrist suggested that the surgery would be the best option for him.
"For similar patients, we ask about their therapy history before accepting the surgery."
The clip has racked up 2.2 million views and 224,000 likes so far, as well as plenty of comments – but many social media users said the patient had wasted his money as they couldn't hear a difference in his pitch.
"Bro doesn’t even sound diffrent," wrote one user. [sic]
"Spent 3-5k for a slight slight slight change. Literally went down an octave (almost)," added someone else. [sic]
"Bro spent 3k to sound tired all the time," wrote a third user, adding a crying emoji.
"I literally can’t tell the difference," added another viewer, adding two skull emojis.
"Doesn’t sound like anything change," commented a fifth user.
Another person added: "Bro got a sore throat for 3k." [sic]
"It literally just sounds like he’s quieter," wrote someone else, also adding a skull emoji.
Others defended the patient's choice to get his voice altered, while some expressed concerns.
"Ay man if hes happy that’s all the matters. Ppl gon hate in the comments but if he feels more comfortable its worth it.," wrote one user. [sic]
"Bro could have waited 2 years," added someone else, including a skull emoji.
"It’s [the video] 2 hours post surgery. I don’t think anybody here understands what healing is..," wrote another person.
"I'm glad he's happy he sounds great," wrote a third user, adding a thumbs up emoji.
Dr Yelken, who changes the pitch and tone of people's voices through surgery, also recently went viral with another TikTok of a patient who went from sounding like he was "13 to 35".
Voice dysmorphia is very rare but he says it is more common among transgender patients.
The surgery is performed under local anaesthetic and works by relaxing the vocal cords and making an incision into the lower part of the neck.
A “cartilage island” is made onto the thyroid cartilage and pushed back, which makes the voice sound deeper.
The more the cartilage is relaxed, the lower the pitch of the voice will be, explains Kursat.
During the surgery, which lasts around 45 minutes, patients can choose their preferred pitch and tone of voice, listening to the way it sounds.
Recovery is relatively quick, with patients being discharged and allowed to speak straight away – although the voice may sound raspy and hoarse at first.
The doctor says that the incisions made to the neck tend to heal in around a week, and patients can expect to be fully healed within eight months.
Dr Kursat Yelken added: "Voice deepening surgery cannot be reversed, in order to have a higher voice pitch, patients would need to undergo voice lifting surgery.
"Sure, voice does deepen with puberty, and this is why I don't do this operation on anyone under the age of 18.
"I would also like to add that this surgery is a very personal choice.
"There are no major risks to this surgery, so if the patient is unhappy with their voice (whether it is at dysmorphia level or not), it is the patient's decision to have it or not.
"It is not our job to judge or make decisions for our patients."
