How does tomotherapy work? Dr. Brian Kim explains that tomotherapy works in real time. With tomotherapy, you get real time imaging before your treatment. One can see where they're treating as opposed to conventional machines where patients are lined up using external markers and the radiation beam is turned on. This works only with the assumptions everything is lined up internally as planned. However, doctors know that that does not happen. Organs and tumors can shift around. Tomotherapy allows a CT scan to be taken everyday before treatment. With the CT scan, you know where everything is so you can accurately target the tumor.
