In Galatians 4, Ephesians 1, and Romans 8 & 9, Paul uses the word huiothesia - translated adoption as sons - to explain our spiritual standing. In order to further grasp the significance of this analogy of adoption, let's look at the adoption common in Paul's time - that of 1st Century Roman society. This will sharpen our understanding of our status in God's family, our promise of an inheritance from the Father, and our security as justified through Jesus's death and ressurection.
