The extensor digitorum longus muscle is an anterior lower leg muscle. The anterior group of the lower leg muscles is comprised of the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus and extensor digitorum muscle, all being extensor muscles.
The extensor digitorum longus muscle has its origin on the lateral condyle of the tibia, the ventral fibula and the interosseous membrane, and extends to the dorsal aponeurosis and the bases of the distal and middle phalanges of the second to fifth toes.
In this short tutorial we will learn about the most important muscle facts: origin, insertion, innervation and function of the extensor digitorum longus muscle.
- 0:12 anterior leg muscles
- 0:50 extensor digitorum longus origin and insertion
- 1:40 innervation by the deep fibular nerve
- 1:48 functions of the extensor digitorum longus
