France: Big Blow To Macron As Far-Right Leads in First Round of Parliamentary; Protests Erupt
France holds two-phase parliamentary elections with the first round on June 30. The country recorded a 67% voter turnout in the first round, the highest in decades. Exit polls show Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) party in the lead with 34% votes while President Macron’s centrist camp trails with around 20% votes. Hastily assembled New Popular Front likely to get 29% votes in the first round. Le Pen hails the election results as “historic” since it marks the first time far-right has witnessed a surge since World War II. Le Pen’s protege 28-year-old Jordan Bardella says he is ready to be the Prime Minister of France. Far-right’s surge in elections has triggered massive protests with thousands hitting the streets in Paris. French PM Gabriel Attal has warned against far-right’s victory while the NFP has called itself the “only alternative”.
