The construction technique for one of the most complex sections of the Melbourne Metro Rail Project - crossing under the Yarra River – has been announced, with tunnelling confirmed as the preferred method.
Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will be used to excavate the two Melbourne Metro rail tunnels between the new CBD South and Domain stations.
TMBs have been used to build tunnels on many major public transport projects in densely populated urban areas throughout Australia and the world, including Sydney Metro and London’s CrossRail project.
