For centuries, historians are excited by the very idea of the Roman Legions. The Legio V Macedonia wins the history award for the longest legion alive. This legion was founded in Transalpine Gaul in 52 BCE by Caesar. The creation of this unit was a crucial step towards the Romanization of the provinces: from now on, the provincials were not barred from service within the legions. Units of V Macedonia with units from I Italic and XI Claudia took turns guarding Roman towns within the Crimea. Furthermore, the Emperor paid them from his own pocket!
