Amid historic migration levels, and despite the dangers of riding atop train cars, hundreds of migrants used them in Mexico Tuesday to reach the United States border.

Migrants, mainly from Venezuela, many with small children, rode a freight train to reach Ciudad Juárez across the border from El Paso, Texas.

According to the migrants, they managed to get around Mexican immigration officers and policemen but were eventually barred from reaching the U.S. side of the border by recently installed barbed wire.

A sudden surge of migrants in the past weeks triggered the closure of one U.S. border crossing and forced Mexico’s largest railroad to suspend dozens of freight trains, stranding thousands of migrants in other parts of the country.

Senior U.S. officials including Secretary of State Antony Blinken were in Mexico on Wednesday for talks with Mexican officials regarding the drug trade and a humanitarian crisis at the U.S. southern border. (AP/VOA) #usborder #migrants #ciudadjuarez
