Spotted Lake is located in southernmost town in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia between Penticton and Omak in British Columbia.
Throughout the winter and into spring the lake looks just like any other lake, but as the summer temperature heats up water starts to evaporate leaving hundreds of huge briny pools of water gets left behind, leaving a polka-dotted lake of yellow, green and blue spots.
These amazing colors are the result of a high concentration of minerals in the lake water, including calcium, sodium sulphates, magnesium sulphate and traces of silver and titanium
Spotted Lake has no river or creek to drain it and receives all of its water as run-off from the surrounding hills and The colors on these pools is depend on the concentration of minerals in each pool.
Indigenous people of Okanagan Nation considered the spotted lake sacred place for centuries. They believed that each of the different circles had different healing and medicinal properties.
During World War I, minerals from the lake were used to manufacture ammunition. The minerals were harvested by laborers, who mined as much as one ton of salt from the lake each day.
