When Venezuelan double bassist Edicson Ruiz was accepted by the Berlin Philharmonic, he was only 17 years old. He is the youngest member to have ever played in the orchestra. And Edicson Ruiz was the first musician from Latin America to join the Berlin Philharmonic.
How did Edicson Ruiz manage to join the prestigious orchestra? Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra meets Edicson Ruiz at the Berlin Philharmonie and talks to him about his life.
Edicson Ruiz was born in Caracas in 1985. He studied double bass under Felix Petit, and later with Klaus Stoll at the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic. He began his orchestral career in 1996 as principal bassist with the Sinfónica Juvenil de Caracas. Three years later, he became double bassist for the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar. At the age of 16, he made his debut there as principal bassist. Since 2003, Edicson Ruiz has played with the Berlin Philharmonic.
