Somalia is currently responding to an outbreak of vaccine-derived poliovirus. To end the outbreak, Somalia’s polio programme needs to raise immunity levels. This means vaccinating every child under age five with two drops of oral polio vaccine. Regular immunization campaigns are being held across the country with a focus on hard-to-reach and nomadic populations, and frontline health workers are working to help parents understand the importance of completing vaccination schedules.
