Today I spoke with Laura Alcala, who grew up into a devout Catholic believer but fully deconverted as the truth claims of Christianity fell apart.
We touched on many topics, including:
• Growing up in the Catholic church on both cultural and personal levels.
• Being traumatized as she attended a poorly lit church with gory statues that scared her as a child to the point that she had nightmares.
• Hearing nonstop messages of being very bad and so guilty that she needed salvation from god to be forgiven and go to heaven.
• Feeling the love of Mother Mary more than of Yahweh and Jesus.
• Going through the sacraments, such as Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, etc.
• Having a strong faith in god and feeling his presence everywhere.
• Thinking that the holy Catholic church was the one true church.
• Being shocked when she learned about the many varieties of Protestant beliefs.
• Not having Bible reading ever emphasized to her.
• Being astonished at the purity culture issues in Evangelical Christianity.
• Getting married with the strong expectation of raising their kids as Catholics.
• Realizing that the historical Jesus was completely different from the Christ of faith.
• Raising her children without the constraints and traumas of Christianity.
Thanks to Laura for sharing her story and insights!
