Buying story
The first time I saw a motorized camera slider, it was the Rhino Arc 2. As a professional videographer, I looked at this system and thought it would make the perfect tool to improve interview sequences and b-roll. The problem, however, was the cost and practicality of transporting it.
I want my gear to be as light and compact as possible. I also tend to use the tools more often if they require minimal set up. It’s all about compact, fast, and easy to use camera gear.
Above all this, a motorized camera slider just seemed like a want, rather than a need. If I could get away with using a gimbal or the good old “towel drag” trick, I would, and I did. Until I saw the Edelkrone SliderONE. It was so small and compact you didn’t have to pack another bag to location! Plus, with the typical set up I use, it looked like it could handle the weight with very smooth movements.
So what’s the Edelkrone like after a few months?
Highlighted key features
I have to point out the size. It’s very compact, and this slider fits in my camera bag with ease. It goes where I go. No longer than a zoom lens, and roughly the same weight, it’s amazing how much usage I get from this thing. Without a long rail system, I am limited in duration for my shots, but by controlling the speed at which this slider moves, I can easily get beautiful slider shots that last.
SliderONE will connect to a tripod. It does come with the different thread mounts, it’s how I typically use it in the field.
Vertical shots and weight tolerance is worth mentioning. SliderONE can handle a decent lens and camera body set up. I think it’s rated for up to 5 lbs in vertical operation (10lbs horizontal), which is enough to get smooth reveal shots that would be impossible to achieve by hand.
While I love that the slider can run off just one LP-E6 Canon battery, you better have a few of these kicking around for longer projects.
When it comes to noise, the Edelkrone motors are very quiet. You normally wouldn’t hear them if you’re subject is further away, but for close ups where you need audio, it might be a problem.
Get the FlexTILT Head. With the SliderONE it is a must. Now, I initially tried using it to get even closer to my subjects, extending it away from the slider, however, you need to balance the overhang. Depending on the lens and body you are using, it can only hang so far.
The HeadONE rotating head is quite good. It didn’t have any issues with pan shots, even with a heavy zoom lens attached. Plus, you can even use it as a stand-alone turntable where you can put your camera in a static position then have your subject rotating independently.
Other things to consider is that Edelkrone offers a TradeUp program, similar to how you could trade in your iPhone at Apple, they give you options to do so for new product discounts. In this case, you might find that the SliderONE PRO is more suitable if you have a larger heavier camera set up.
Price? Edelkrone SliderONE v2 ($647) with FlexTILT Head v3 ($129) and HeadONE ($517)
Favourite Thing
Over the years I have bought equipment to enhance my filming techniques and honestly, there is some equipment I just don’t use anymore. Sometimes, you are hard pressed to stay on a tight schedule or other times you simply don’t want cumbersome gear to get in the way of creativity.
The Edelkrone SliderONE is a tool that I take with me wherever I go. For those specific high-quality shots, it’s great. Compact and quick to set up, there isn’t anything else that can do what it can so it’s a must have. Love it.
Thanks for watching!
