STORYLINE:
Anti-government protesters gathered around Hungary's parliament building in Budapest on Saturday as demonstrators marked the anniversary of a failed revolution against the Hapsburg empire in 1848.
It came only days after a referendum when voters firmly rejected a series of government proposals, mainly about healthcare costs, the latest in a series of difficulties for prime minister Ferenc Gyurcsany.
Hungary has been plagued by the European Union's highest budget deficit for the past few years: nearly 10 percent of GDP in 2006 and slightly below six percent expected this year.
Attempts to balance the budget have resulted in higher taxes and massive layoffs in the public sector, along with high inflation and unemployment and very low growth.
The prime minister's approval rating stands at just 19 percent, according to the latest Gallup poll.
He has struggled to keep his position since weeks of protests and riots broke out in September 2006 following the revelation that he lied about the true state of the economy to win the April 2006 elections.
Gyurcsany, almost four years in office and said to be one of the richest men in Hungary, has also been accused of widespread corruption.
