(14 Jun 2014) The UN Special Representative for Iraq, Nickolay Mladenov visited Iraq's Kurdistan region on Saturday during a trip to monitor the humanitarian crisis in the country.
In the region's capital Irbil, Mladenov held a news conference with Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), during which he stated that everyone in the region should cooperate over the current crisis.
"No community, no part of the country is immune from the threat that has emerged over the last few days," he said.
Barzani said the KRG had contacted the federal government in Baghdad several times to warn them about the "problems in Mosul" but received no response.
Barzani added that it wasn't the KRG's intention to take over the places that are now controlled by the Peshmerga, the Kurdish armed forces, like the city of Kirkuk.
Thousands of displaced Iraqis continue to seek shelter in Iraq's Kurdistan region.
