We are back with a brand-new season!! In today’s premier we are talking about a topic that definitely impacts the playability of your instrument, but doesn’t get a lot of ‘air time’ (as well as announcing that we’re now on Patreon!!)

The scale length of a guitar or bass can significantly impact the overall experience of how your instrument plays. As we say in the episode, there are two main factors that the scale length can impact: the overall tension of the strings and the size and spacing of the frets. Since the definition of scale length is just the distance between where the strings last contact the bridge to where they first contact the nut at the top, that ‘suspended string distance’ will require a very specific amount of tension in order to bring that string to the correct pitch.

For example, a longer scale length means that there is physically ‘more string’ that is suspended between attachment points. Physically speaking, that means it’s essentially heavier and wants to ‘sink’ more, so you’ll need to apply more tension (from turning the tuning pegs) to ‘hold’ it up and in tune. This increased tension can be felt when you pluck or strum the strings! So, a shorter scale length would then result in feeling ‘less tension’ when you play. Again, this doesn’t affect the pitch of the notes but definitely will impact what you feel when you play.

The second area that scale length impacts is fret size and spacing. Once again, the exact length of the suspended string will directly impact where all of the frets need to be placed so that all the notes will play in tune. With a shorter scale length, the frets can be placed closer together and vice versa for a longer scale length.

Ultimately, these factors truly come down to a player’s personal preference. Some players prefer closer fret spacings or other might prefer ‘tighter’ feeling strings and so on. There are also many players that may not have thought much about what they prefer until they watch this episode describing the impacts of scale length!
