Aloha from Kaua'i, HI.
My Name is Colleen. I am a 28yr old Marriage and Family Therapist on the Island of Kauai, I work specifically with child victims of trauma in Sexual Assault and Abandonment.
The night of the Tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary after a tiring work day filled with shock, disbelief and utter sadness due to the news, I had a dream. I dreamt of the shooting, and that I was sent with a team of trauma Therapist's to work with the families and survivors. Except in the dream I had no idea how to help them, all my techniques, words etc would not work, my training, books were inaffective and did nothing; it was too horrible. The dream continued with me trying everything I had been trained to do to console the families and child survivors and nothing would work.
I decided in my dream the only thing that might help would be to sing to them and so I began singing them "Cradle Me" a song my mother wrote and had sung to me as a child when I needed consoling. In the dream, once I began to sing, a young boy came and sat in my lap and he was soothed. I got through maybe one verse when I woke up because I had begun to cry. My husband woke up to me crying and asked me what happened? I was so out of it I kept saying I need to sing to the little boy, "cradle me", "cradle me". I had a hard time returning to sleep after that so I got up and began dream journaling (something I have not done in a long time). A new dream/idea came to my mind and it wouldn't leave (dreams can be funny that way. I decided to create a very simplistic music video of my mothers song "Cradle Me" and dedicate it and any potential proceeds directly to the Sandy Hook Tragedy victims, families and survivors. Within two days on the very small and limited Island of Kauai my husband and I were able to acquire a very talented and popular Musician and Vocal Trainer to learn, help re-write the melody and accompany me in the only formal music studio on the Island. We were also fortunate to find the help of a local videographer who showed up with less than 12 hours notice and a sound/studio engineer who recorded, edited and cut the track within 3 hours. All this squeezed between my full day of 5-7yr old client sessions. The song is beautiful and solenm and speaks to what seems to be the Grand Message thus far in this horrific tragedy; "Words don't seem to do justice to the unimaginable pain, suffering and sadness that has overcome this town".
All I can think to do is offer embracement. Hold each other close, love one another and slowly allow the grieving to occur. I imagine mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers and so on, simply cradling each other and having to endure the pain that is. If this song might possibly offer even just one person some comfort as it has us, we will have achieved. If you are moved; Please SHARE!
May the Spirit of Christmas be upon you even in the midst of tragedy,
Colleen and Joshua Block (Kauai, HI).
