MSCA Future Roads Fellows Chapa Sirithunge and Arsen Abdulali had a great opportunity to showcase their research at the EU Science Fair "Science is Wonderful!" 2024. They set up a booth to introduce young minds to the cutting-edge world of robotics through engaging games - "RoboPilot Adventures."
The application of haptic and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies aimed to showcase to the visitors remotely operating robots in the construction and maintenance of roads and civil infrastructure.
Children aged 8-16 and teachers from around the globe were given a hands-on experience to operate a robot via a VR headset, enhanced using a haptic device. Digital twin of the robot and a realistic construction environment were created. Using a haptic interface, children could control the simulated robot, replicating the experience of teleoperation.
The booth aimed to offer a glimpse into the future of construction and maintenance, envisioning a scenario where workers can operate robots comfortably from the convenience of warm offices.
