Chapter 4 of our new book, How to Kill Your Koi ([ Ссылка ]), is dedicated to teaching you how to keep your koi pond clean
Based on the myth: My pond is “all natural” and never needs to be cleaned. You are attempting to recreate a complete ecosystem from scratch which is VERY hard to do correctly. Instead, a little bit of knowledge and regular maintenance go a long way to ensure your water chemistry stays happy.
Get to know your mechanical filtration, which works to remove particulates (ex. Settling tanks, drum or sieve filters, skimmers) and your biological filtration, where your beneficial bacteria live (ex. Matting, strapping, pressurized bead filters, gravel, old-school sand).
Water changes (link) are a critical part of koi pond maintenance. If you plan on using plants to bring down your nitrate – sure, but you’ll need to dedicate ¼ or more of your pond volume. Maybe try Aquaponics instead? Link to Aquaponics resources: [ Ссылка ]
Our new book includes a checklist of daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal and yearly tasks to keep you on schedule.
If you want to hire a maintenance company? Fine, but check out our list of questions to ask including “how do they clean their equipment” and “do they know how your filtration components work?” Learn more about working with maintenance companies: [ Ссылка ]
