Mercedes-Benz announced late last week that it has begun production of the first all-electric Mercedes-EQ to be built in the U.S., the new EQS SUV.
Production begins at the company's plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, home to the Mercedes-Benz large SUV since 1997 and now home to the Mercedes-EQ luxury electric SUV.
Mercedes-Benz unveiled its luxury electric EQS SUV this year. With room for up to seven passengers and a range of up to 660 km (WLTP), the EQS is the third model series built on its new EV architecture, which also offers the EQS luxury sedan and the EQE sports sedan.
The North American production marks another milestone for VKS, following the launch in Europe in early August and a recall in China. The start of production is also an important step towards Mercedes-Benz's larger goal of producing eight all-electric vehicles at seven plants on three continents by the end of the year.
Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG: "Our production network is ideally suited for the sustainable and rapid expansion of sales of electric vehicles." "With the addition of the new EQS SUV to our production portfolio of all-electric Mercedes-EQ models, we have reached another important milestone in our strategy to transition to all-electric by the end of the decade as soon as market conditions permit."
The state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Tuscaloosa is also supported by the recently opened Mercedes-Benz battery plant in Bibb County, Alabama, which provides EQS with its high-efficiency battery system.
