On 4 April 1949, twelve countries signed the North Atlantic Treaty leading to the formation of NATO in Washington D.C. The 12 founding members of the alliance were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States.
